I think I'm losing my mind. I can't keep up with the time. Don't let it go or they might never know. It's fascinating to find, the kids are barely alive. One look is all that it takes before the camera. Stop this flashing inside. But there's no place to hide. You take a breath and they hold another centerfold. We're our own medicine. We steal from our idols. We bite the hands that shake us awake. So we run to the beat, with our hearts in our feet. Pretty girls, pretty boys, break the laws of gravity. Watch our lives on the screen, between the lines we never read. We hold our hands up to the sky, redraw the lines from memory. Under cover we fight a war where no one is right. Pull back the sheets and you'll see we fight so pleasantly. We understate our demands, bury heads in the sand. We carry seeds of our cultural irrelevance. We're silent outside, but we still have the drive and we will never grow old.

Firecracker 02:39
Your heart is holding up, firecracker. And my heart is old enough, firecracker. You turned me inside out, firecracker take me home tonight. A brilliant chaos, a bottle rocket. With my fingers crossed, inhibitions lost. Unpredictable, unstoppable, oh take me home tonight. When I step into the light My heart races, my knuckles white. Spark your fuse with one wrong move. Brace for a fight, when we ignite. Before I get arrested here's my alibi: There was nothing left to try, but watch the dark night sky to see the shape and size of your explosions of mind. Da da da da... When I step into the light My heart races, my knuckles white. Spark your fuse with one wrong move. Brace for a fight, when we ignite. Before I get arrested here's my alibi: There was nothing left alive except my drunken pride. I conceded defeat this time… I concede defeat this time... I concede defeat this time to your explosions of mind.

Bad Weather 03:03
I’m buyin’, what you’re sellin’. I keep tryin’, we're too jealous. Close shutters, to keep heart in. Loud thunder, but you're yellin'. We built this, together. So take shelter, from bad weather. Pulling me close with your tender hands. Pushing me back with your eyelid razors. Holding me down with your funny kind of love. Our parents, had problems. They're good people, but they can’t solve them. Our problems, are our problems. There's no sense in havin’, the same argument. Pulling me close with your tender hands. Pushing me back with your eyelid razors. Holding me down with your funny kind of love. Funny how it all make sense when We go back and do it again. Isn’t this a funny kind of love? Funny how it all make sense when We go back and think through it again. Isn’t this a funny kind of love? (Repeat)

She has had enough, sick of all those silly schoolboys. She moved to SF, west of where the sun sets. She is on her own, in a Tenderloin apartment. She moved to New York, with the dreamers and the starlets. Tonight, they'll save you tonight. This is not your paradise. It’s another night, in and out of love and laughter. With enemies, she couldn't find the one she's after. It’s on her mind, Providence is never that far. But rock and roll biographies, fill her head with stories of the stars. Tonight, they'll save you tonight. This is not your paradise. (Repeat) Two wrongs, darlin’, make a right. She wanted more, it's in her bones. She closed her eyes, she wandered home. They lived to tell the stories that she longed to know. No fear of death, nothing to lose, nothing to show. Nothing to show.

Lately I can't sleep at all, at all. Waiting for the great, collapse, on me. Fragile buildings tumble down, onto the ground, onto the ground. Crumbling under sound, of a thousand bad decisions. Lately my head hurts. But I must, endure. Learning not to fight, the, pressure. But still I wait, for the catastrophe. Still I see it in my dreams. But still I wait, I see it in my dreams. Building bridges just to knock them down. I’m wandering until I’m found. The less I try, the less I lose. I’m waiting for my next excuse. I am not young, I am, not old. No longer a kid, though I try, so hard This is the city, of golden ages, extending past the reach of nature. With glass half empty, I feel unstoppable. Unstoppable. Building bridges just to knock them down. I’m wandering until I’m found. The less I try, the less I lose. I’m waiting for my next... Building bridges just to knock them down. I’m wandering until I’m found. The less I try, the less I lose. I’m waiting for my next excuse.

Hibernation 01:58
It’s another day. I wake up on the wrong side of the bed. My friends all say, to look for a different bed instead. I haven't felt this way. It’s colder than December. It's 4 o'clock, and an army of kids they stagger home. Some are alone, but others go walking arm and arm. Their second chance ‘cause tonight everybody does get what they want. What they want. Through good and bad, we always keep our heads above water. And fool ourselves, like leading cattle to the slaughter. Feeling helpless now. The ground moves back as I go forward. It's 4 o'clock, and an army of kids they stagger home. Some are alone, but others go walking arm and arm. Their second chance ‘cause tonight everybody does get what they want. What they want. Hibernation. Hiding from what I have become. The words all sound the same but we don’t feel what we say... We're hating each other.

When I look back as the years fall apart, I see too many pictures hanging out at the bar. It wasn’t quite out of control, but we were definitely twisted. I work everyday at a job that I hate. I hate every place that I’ve worked at todate. If there was a lesson to learn, then I probably missed it. We remember the kids who have fallen in battle, who took too many drugs like it’s 90’s Seattle. They faded away and left us wondering, “where are they now?” I'm starting to see, a collection of life’s injuries. Broken bones, severed hearts, hopes are falling apart. It still doesn't make sense to me. I try to prepare for whatever comes next. The possibilities heavy on my beating chest. The horizon seems miles away, but I’ll get there somehow. But I found an answer in the strangest of places. With the brightest of eyes and the smallest of faces. Knowing I was supposed to protect you, but you were my savior. I remember the days, when drunken promises were made. Our bodies are aching, our friends’ going gray. But I still wouldn’t throw it all away. Throw it away... I stare at the sky, knowing there is nowhere I can hide. From this game that I lose, leaves me battered and bruised. But still, I'm happy I tried. Still I'm so happy I tried.

Ypsilanti 03:53
I'm having a breakthrough. It's my turn for a bad mood. She said she likes whiskey, and that's funny 'cause...my name sounds like a whiskey. With a me-too attitude, she had best times, but she'll tell you that everything important, happens in the rain. It's hot out tonight. This town isn't anywhere good. We have blisters on our eyes. This summer is endless. No escaping this landlocked mess. We were chasing a dream but we slept through it. She needed a tempo change, from the same guys in the same bands from better days. She told me they'd just scored some heroin, from poser preppy kids. These were friends that come at 4am. I’d offer them a beer, and they'd drink all of them. Then they’d sing that California, was the promise land. The promise land. It's hot out tonight. This town isn't anywhere good. We have blisters on our eyes. This summer is endless. No escaping this landlocked mess. We were chasing a dream but we slept through it. I want to disappear. To fade into thin air. The noose is getting tight. Oh get me out of here. Just take me anywhere. Let's ditch this town tonight. She’s blinded by the dawn again, while she lead my hand through the streets of A-2 Michigan. Sayin’ there's no need for, another song about me. Then she jumped up on the table, and shouted “how it'd go wrong?” Oh, don't worry about it. It's the same old party song. It's hot out tonight. This town isn't anywhere good. We have blisters on our eyes. This summer is endless. No escaping this landlocked mess. We were chasing a dream but we slept through it. Slept through it... (Repeat)

about

The phrase “monsters never die” came to me in a dream in 2016, but the word "monsters" has been a theme for me for a while. I use it like other people use "inner demons", as in the dark secrets and bad habits we all harbor. To me, "monsters never die" is a way of saying that people (myself included) don't actually change, but instead we learn to live with and cope with our inner monsters. And we learn to deal with those of the people around us - and sometimes even befriend these monsters. These things are part of who we are, and with all relationships (romantic or otherwise), you take the good with the bad. The record has songs about relationships, debauchery and inner conflict, but the tone is more "fuck it, shit happens, let's party" than it is "I'm depressed, I give up". So I thought Monsters Never Die kind of worked as a title.
